Notecards - "Back Then"
Back Then
'Back Then' Bahamian Style recaptures the slower pace and idyllic charm of the islands from the later 1800's to the mid 1900's. These photographs are from the collection of the Marlborough Antiques (Nassau) and were hand coloured by Bahamian artist Brent Malone.

The photographers of four of the images are unknown and come from the private albums of old Bahamian families. The remaining six are the work of Jacob F Coonley.

At the end of the American Civil War, during which he was conscripted as an official war photographer for the North, Coonley came to the Bahamas at the invitation of the Governor. After the dangers and discomfort of war, it must have been a considerable relief to Coonley to spend the winters in peace and tranquility on these islands.
